Please Help! hurt monitor

Chr0nus Dec 17, 2004 06:47 PM

oh boy...first off its a savannah monitor, shes about 11 inches long and just had an encounter with a cat. my door is closed to my room at all times becasue of the cat and i for got to close it about 30 min ago when i left. anyway i came into my room to see the cat in the cage and soap(the sav) under his hide puffing up and doing his thing. well the cat saw me and freaked out and i grabed her to pull her out and as i did soap leaped out and bit her paw and wouldent let go thus resulting inme and saop to be bitten. well i freaked out when i saw all the blood, but aperently it was mine and soap has what apears to be a bite mark on his head and a tiny cut on the side of his jaw. the thing is he wont move and has his tounge stuck out. i hope he is just playing dead. all i can do now is help him as much as i can tonight because first thing im gonna take him to the vet tomorrow.

if you guys have any sugestions on what i should do for him i would be thankful

If this is a joke. Your not funny.

Its sounds to me like your monitor is dead. Monitors dont hang their tongues out for nothing. If you want you gentily squeeze one of the monitors toes with a pair of tweezers to see if you get a pain response. But again not moving, tongue sticking out, sounds like a deceased monitor.

why would i joke about something like this?

anyway, yeah thats what i would think to but he did move around a bit and he just left a little bit of his tounge out, it wasnt like the whole thing was out

if hes not moving and his tongue is out hes probly dead.

yes, i just checked him again and he is dead.
I just didnt think with the injuries he had that it would kill him.

but thank you to all that replied

what a way to end the year right

The bite to the head may have been deeper than you first suspected resulting in trauma and swelling to the brain. Bites from cats and dogs are usually puncture wounds.. you never see the full extent of the damage if you just look at the surface of a wound. This is especially true with cats who tend to have sharper teeth. I had to learn the hard way too... my first snake.. a Ball Python, ended up getting out of his cage because I forgot to snap the lid down tight. Well.. he got wrapped up in a chair that I checked over completely or so I thought... and we moved the chair outside to be thrown away. 3 weeks later my upstairs neighbor ended up cutting it in half purposely because they didn't know what kind of snake it was when they saw it crawling across the ground in front of my house. I learned my lesson after that completely and have never left another cage unlatched since. Sometimes it takes the hard way for us to learn and its a very unfortunate thing.
