Lizarddude720 Dec 17, 2004 08:03 PM

Hey

I want to fatten my 2 female cresteds so they will b ready for breeding. What r some good foods to use. How many times a day or week should i feed them?
(sorry about spelling)

Thanks,

If you have females that are under a year of age, they're still growing and "fattening" foods aren't going to help speed up that process. If you want them to grow up faster, offer them insects more often or increase feeding intervals of whatever it is you feed them.

Try some worms such as mealworms or silkworms and give us a report if they eat them. They are fairly high in fat. Butterworms are the best, if you can find them! - Matt

Just a question...

But can cresteds eat wax worms? Is it safe for them? I tried it ONCE a few weeks ago and my crestie is still okay. I don't want to try and feed it again unless I hear that it's safe, and I'll probably only feed it a once a month or once every other month if it is safe. She's about 8 months old.

So far, she's been doing well on a couple crickets every other day which she LOVES to hunt down, baby food (peach, banana, & her favorite fruit medley) mixed with CGD, and sometimes CGD by itself. That's pretty much been her diet since I've had her back in October.

She will be trying silkworms next month.

Also, how safe are mealworms?

Thanks everyone

Just be patient. Fattening up a subadult (who isn't done growing) isn't going to do anything to help your cause. If you had a female that was a little lean after breeding season, I'd say to go for anything high in sugars and/or fats to put some bodyfat back on her, but not with a subadult.

The general rule of thumb I use around here is that all females must be at least 35 grams in weight and a year of age before being introduced to a male. If a female doesn't meet either of those conditions, she doesn't get bred. Furthermore, if the female looks like she has quite a bit more filling out to do, I wait. Some of my females have been 40 grams before introducing them to a male.

Sure...you can make a subadult weigh 35 grams sooner than normal by feeding fattening foods, but you can also get a 12 year old girl to weigh 150 lbs. by giving her lots of Twinkies & ice cream...but that still doesn't make her fit to have children.

Just my .02
