I'm Gunna Puke If I See Another...
(fill in the blank)at the next reptile show I go to.
Come on everybody its madlibs gone herper. I seriouly might puke up my over priced relish covered hot dog, fritos, and coca-cola if I see another corn snake or bearded dragon at the next reptile show I go to. Now I am sure that this over opinionated behavior is distastful to some of you, but its all in fun. Haven't you ever gotten tired of seeing the same old (fill in the blank) at your local reptile show. That why I love to go out of state and see different shows so I don't see another table full of (fill in the blank) and vomit my lunch and that persons crappy selection of (fill in the blank). Especially when you don't chew well and it come up in chunks. Fritos, or pumpkin seeds are among the worst to up chuck. Them and pickles and lemondade. But I might freely puke those items up if I see another (fill in the blank) at the next reptile show.

Barf bags are sold in bulk, aren't they? Sounds like you need some, since the "same old" are the foundation species of this hobby. There are many people who work with these species--corns, beardies, etc., and enjoy them very much. And, they are good species for new people coming into the hobby to begin with. These are the species I would expect to see, especially at smaller, more local shows. Sometimes looking at other breeder's animals gives me insight into my own projects as well.

Timing of the shows also plays a part in what is offered at them, as are the guidelines. Does the show allow WC imports, legal WC indigenous or only CB? Venomous? Is the show at the beginning, middle or end of a breeding season? If WC, some species are only imported at certain times of the year. Who runs the shows--reptile dealers, herp societies? Are husbandry items offered for sale? Feeders? Animals other than herps?

My point is that there are many factors which determine what is and is not offered at specific shows. For me, the commraderie of being with other herpers is worth the price of admission. Many times, in talking with people, I've discovered that what they are selling at the show is not everything they keep in their herp collections, thus opening up possibilities for viewing and acquiring more "interesting" species. Sorry so long--just my opinion.

regards,
althea

I have to respectfully disagree with you here. Compliments on your signature list, but a lot of people really like the common animals. I personally have little interest in Beardies and Corn snakes, but you have to admit they're some of the most user-friendly critters out there.
Part of it might be the same local vendors doing the same local shows. So of course they'll be offering the same stuff.
I see two ways you can survive this.
A. Handle the show as a finicky wine conniseur might handle Napa Valley. Seek out the rare and unusual reptiles that intrigue you but keep an eye on the "two buck chuck" to see if there are any of the common critters that are bred or raised to exceptional quality or appearance. If any are, you could point them out to a novice friend or maybe even lengthen your signature. (Note to keepers of common critters... I intend no insult by comparing them to cheap wine, it was just a handy metaphor.)
B. Wear a blindfold around the show

Don't take this so seriously. It was obviously meant as a joke. There IS such thing as being entirely too sensitive....I know exactly what he's talking about. At most shows you have to pick through 100 different varieties of Corns Snakes or Ball Pythons to find something different....at table after table after table. Could they possibly SELL that many Corn Snakes and Ball Pythons? They are pretty animals (most of them, anyway), I'm not taking anything away from them...but GEEZ...after looking at 25 tables of 'em it does get a little old.

Soooo...here's the way I do it. I keep mostly Drymarchon of one variety or another..I find very few of them at the shows. Drymarchon love Corn Snakes...they find them delicious. So, I treat the shows like I'm going to the grocery store for my Drys. It's like I'm figuring out what they would like to eat for the next 6 months.

That was a joke, too...so don't get all up in arms....we have to be able to joke around a little. I don't really buy Corn Snakes to feed to my Drys.

I do find it amazing just how many varieties of Corn Snakes are out there now. When I first started with snakes, a Corn Snake was a Corn Snake...you had a few different locales that looked somewhat different, but that's about it. Bernt Bechtel was researching albinism in Corn Snakes and a very few albinos were finding their way out into private hands..at a cost of a couple hundred bucks a copy (big money then). Kathy Love has done some amazing things with her Corn Snakes in the last 30 years or so....

Thank you. It was only a joke. Its the holidays everyone needs to just have some fun. I myself am looking by a large corn breeding group sometime in January, and I have also owned a beardy. Not anymore, but I did at one point back when they where rare. It was a cool pet. I agree the common animals are the back bone of the herping economy and the rare animals are more specialty items. I agree the main animals are what support herpetology, but I was just having a little fun. Here what you could have said. I'm gunna puke if... I see snake master myke at the next show. JK! If you did I would be offended, but since this is all in fun don't take it so personally.

yup...dont get your panties in a wad over somthing that was obviously not to serious.
I to get a little tired of seeing the same thing at shows, I see no reason that every table at a show needs to have corns and balls...there are plenty of other "starter" snakes out there besides these two

The bigger the show the better, just so long as it isnt all gecko venders, Just kidding. My wife loves Geckos and although I try to limit her addiction it looks like our gecko collection might expand soon. I agree anything at a show is good, this post was meant for fun, but what a failed mission that seemed to be. Oh well.

i bought my first corn snake at petco, (i know). when i got into snakes i never heard of such shows as a reptile show. then i went to my first show and i was amazed at all the different reptiles. then i got hooked.
so i went to show after show and i must say now i've never seen so many baby corns or bearded dragons.
i do have 2 corns (I have 6 snakes total, not all corns) and brought home another one today. it was one i just thought was different and pretty and thought 'why not'.
i would like to see something different at the shows but the shows around Phoenix,Az are so small all the time that its mostly corns and bearded dragons. there is the occasional diffent reptile that sells for hundreds of dollars. out of my price range. so whats a person like me to do....I just love to look at anything and everything.

We have 11 reptiles. 3 corn snakes, 2 colombian redtail boas, 1 dumerils boa, 1 b&w cal king and 4 leopard geckos.
Nothing anyone would say is to exotic. I bought 6 of them from pet shops, 3 from reptile shows and 2 from a breeder out of state thru ups delivery. All my animals are pets and all are very tame. I guess what I'm trying to say is i enjoy going to the reptile shows with a friend or two and cruising some local pet shops and i like seeing all the different types of herps posted here at kingsnake. Lets keep supporting all these. As i believe we would all miss them if they were to go away.
Who knows maybe I might want to get a bearded dragon.lol.
