egg laying space and substrate

I have a small colony of red ackies and I am having trouble finding viable eggs. I had them all (2.3) in a four by four container with dirt and they dug tunnels all over the place and I found eggs sometimes but usually too late. The temp is controlled with a thermostat, appropriate hot spots and hiding places for all, I use a temp gun to check temps, I feed them lobster roaches and turkey diet, and soak them once a week. I then took out all the dirt and put in a sweater box that is roughly 18 by 24 inches and about four inches deep. Again I miss the eggs being laid. When I tried a still smaller box, about 8 by 10, they laid the eggs in the mulch substate.
what is the best way to put in a egg chamber that can be checked easily enough and encourage egg laying in there?

sounds to me you need to read your monitors better. Once you can tell if they are gravid or not then when they are no longer looking gravid, dig the cage up. I typically find the eggs in a spot that is softer then the rest of the area.

If you have a small box thats easy to check, it will not help unless you know when she has laid. Otherwise you'll check it to often discouraging her from using it as a nest site.
