Do you want a clear finish, perhaps over stain, or a painted finish?

Too many scenarios to list.

I think a water-based acrylic paint would be the cheapest, but I've not priced all these different options in some time. You may have to touch up every year or two but that's not a big deal.

Well,
This may not be the cheapest, but laminate countertop from a Home Depot or such will be nice. Its usually around $40-50 for a 4'x8' sheet. A few tubes of the adhesive and your good to go. You can cut it to size, secure it to each surface, and viola! This is a good material because its non-porous (designed for kitchen and bath counters after all) and very tough. Its also easy to clean and shouldn't stain. You could then place a sealant around the joins and have a nice watertight cage.
I'm planning on building a custom setup with this. But please, anyone with feedback please lemme know. It may not be the cheapest but it will last a loooooong time.
