Info Request: S Calif Ensatina, Aneides

rhallman Dec 18, 2004 08:06 AM

After many years I wish to reacquaint myself with some of my favorite field species. I would like some information about the best times and places to locate various S California salamanders. I seem to remember January through March during rain was most productive but my field notes have long since vanished. I am also interested in how things are in the foothills of the San Gabriels since the fires, (Azusa Canyon, Glendora etc). I spent a cold rainy Christmas last year in Glendora and saw plenty of Taricha, a Hyla, an Elgaria, and a Sceloporus, but none of my target species. I have a fresh roll of film ready so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Randy

I remember going up nar saddleback mountain (orange county) and seeing tons of newts but that was a few years ago and i have been up ther with no luck (went in spring forst time and summer other times)

I also find pacific salamanders in my pool every once in a while and i live right by the beach.

You're on track as far as the best time period. You should try to document E.e.croceater in the San Gabriels. Keep us posted on what you find.
