Basic Substrate Question

sw0rdf15h Dec 18, 2004 11:57 AM

Is it detrimental to the frog if it buries itself in the eco earth? It consists of tiny particles and I'm afraid it could get into his nostrils. Also my Pacman frogs usually only bury up to their eyes, but my Frog has buried himself completely into the eco earth that's already beneath an inch of moss. I fail to see how he can breath, and the eco earth is really sludgy. I don't even see how he could get out if he wanted. My temperatures are all good as is the humidity, so he's just hiding. My question is, is this safe? If not, what is a better substrate system? I've moved the heater to the side so burning isn't an issue.

They simply do that, they go into a period like hibernation called brumation. They coccoon themselves in mucous to hold in water and they don't breath a lot, but if it can't breath it won't stay down there, so don't worry about it too much. It may stay down there for 2 months at a time.

But it isn't brumating. He's just normal but buried :- I guess I'll leave him alone then. It's just that he's so damn lazy I'm almost sure he'd rather starve or freeze than move...

That's a natural part of their behavior too, if you don't want to not see them for weeks at a time then lower the level of the substrate and it won't be able to completely hide.
