Need some more help with my gravid female?

TheDrew1 Dec 18, 2004 01:13 PM

So shes back in her cage now and she hasnt eaten in almost a week. And she walks along the screen of the cage while like dragging her nose at it, trying to get out. Shes also gotten a lot bigger. And she has a laying bin thats about 8 inches in diameter with 8 inches deep of sand and soil. Its placed right under her favorite spot in the cage and theres a branch leading to it from the basking spot but shes never gone in it. Should i put her back in the trash can laying bin again or would that just not work? Last time she was in there she never really settled down, she just paced around with stressed colors on. Please help me, its been 35 days and she hasnt eaten in almost a week.

Hi there,
Has she drank any water? If not I would at least try to feed her soom water through a syringe so she stays hydrated. Good luck! Keep up updated!

Apparently you decided not to take the advice some of us gave you earlier?? Let her be! She needs to stay calm, undisturbed. Disturbance (meaning you moving her around, picking her up, changing her environment, offering her food when she is not interested, etc.) = stress = all sorts of problems including potentially dystocia www.anapsid.org/dystocia.html. If you are concerned then bring her to a vet, get an x-ray and assessment of her status. the x-ray will show eggs, location, if she is eggbound etc. A trip to the vet will be stressful but if she is eggbound she will need immediate care.

I do not mean for this to sound harsh, but you have been asking for advice but don't seem to heed what is given. Did you read all the replies to your last thread? We are not there with you and certainly cannot diagnose whether she is having a problem - only an experienced vet can do that. I asked you before - do you HAVE a vet? I know this is a frustrating time for you (the first clutch always is - believe me!) but you need to think of her. Some chams dig trial holes, wander, go to the bottom of the cage. Luna got very restless right before laying and before that showed absolutely no interest in her laying tub. Her cage is set up so that I can completely enclose it (towel and shower curtains). Try covering the cage so she cannot see out and feel more secure - then leave her alone. Also, did she get enough calcium during the time she has been developing eggs??

I can tell you that if you keep messing around with her she will surely have problems. Please for HER sake either let her be or bring her to the vet.

ya sorry if i seems as though im not taking ur advice but i am, when i moved her into the trash can i was trying to give her more privacy and it did but she didnt like it in the trash can so i put her back in her home where shes most comfortable. ive been giving her as much privacy as i can give her. the only times i go in there is for misting and feeding the other animals (1-2 times a day). I dont think shes eggbound because its only been 34 days and shes not on the floor or anything. Also while she was developing eggs i gave her 8-10 crickets a day dusted and some days of the week i didnt dust (in order to not give her too much calcium). What im thinking is shes becoming restless because shes going to lay soon and i was asking for some approval. But what im worried about is that she shows no interest in the laying tub (its a tupperware container with sand and dirt).

As I said I think there is some real variation on how these girls behave with impending laying. Luna acted like she was afraid of her laying pot until I came home from a late evening class to find her in the pot with nothing showing except her short little tail. The second time it was a matter of only one day of being very restless (like non-stop) and I later found her laying.

I really wouldn't worry much about the food but water is most important. Keep her temps up, too. Once she has layed them be ready for a very hungry girl! I don't recall - are these fertile or not?

Do you have a vet just in case? Not sure if you followed the two recent cases, but one of them didn't make it thru the surgery. Just be prepared. There are a few online sites to vets by state - let me know if you need links

Oh - as for the laying tub. I use a mix of play sand (home depot) and coco-fiber (eco-earth, etc.). It should be moist but not wet and if you stick your finger in, it will not collapse.
