slaytonp do you breed

mydumname Dec 18, 2004 06:10 PM

I was just wondering if you breed your frogs and sell them from time to time. I notice you have a nice collection with multiples of each species so I was wondering what you do with your froglets. Thanks

I have never separated eggs and raised tads myself, although some of my egg layers do so on their own. I share these offspring with my daughter and son-in-law, who are also into darts, but have never considered selling them. Some of my groups (galacs and auratus) turned out to be all females. I've never considered breeding and selling anything. I just enjoy these fellows on their own terms. Some however, such as the P. terribilis, D. castaneoticus are still probably too young yet, as they are relatively new additions (within this year.) I may try it if they begin laying eggs, but have no intentions of becoming a commercial "breeder." I'm way too old to consider it-- (over 70, going on 80, a state of affairs I used to think was beyond the boundaries of anything but total drooling in one's soup.) I've had leucs for two years and of the original four, two appeared to be males and one was calling. The calling male escaped and I found him mummified on the floor. I never found the second male, but assume he was also an escapee. After doing some more sealing on the tank (I still don't know how the hell they got out because it seemed impossible,) I obtained four more leucs and these are still juveniles. Two of them look like males, but I haven't heard any calling yet. I'll just see what happens.

Understandable. I just didn't know if your frogs (since you have multiples of each) happen to lay eggs. Their are frogs I was looking to get that you do have, such as the P. teribilis. If you do happen to have a pair that lays eggs, and have no one to give them to, I would purchase them from you. I know you are not a breeder, but I wouldn't expect you to give them away for free to someone you don't know. I am looking to expand my collection in the near future, and just thought you may be able to help. Feel free to let me know anytime if you get extra froglets and have nothing to do with them. mydumname@hotmail.com

I got my 4 P. terribilus from Black Jungle. They were inexpensive and were shipped overnight (UPS) in excellent condition. I've lucked out, I think, by having two males and two females. So far, there's been no sexual interest, but the heftier ladies have each chosen a particular bromeliad cup to hang out in, while the guys tend to "meditate" around the pool. It's going to be fun to watch to see what happens. Although the mints aren't the most colorful of the darts, they do have a mysterious, almost irridescent glow. Mine never seem to hide-out, so are easy to keep track of.
