I have never ordered a snake before by phone, and was wondering if this does happen.

Look around for someone with a pretty good reputation, I have known a few people who have gotten snakes with mites on them, I believe Cody got a retic with mites that he ordered, I have gotten in a few snakes here with them, it happens, although its not a good thing you want, its good to separate new snakes from others if you have them though, just to give them a look over and see if they have brought along any passengers, it only takes one little mite to have an army of them. And they are not fun to have, especially if they get to a large collection.
