A sad day on Long Island

r3ptile Dec 18, 2004 10:36 PM

Yesterday a local pet shop here in Long Island NY burned down killing all but 4 animals. Among the animals that perished were dozens of species of reptiles including burms, balls, rocks, iguanas, a gator (not for sale) and countless other species of almost any animal you can think of. Really sad to imagine the animals last moments.

I wouldn't even want to think about their last minutes.. I work at another pet store on LI, and often went to BTJ... Even my store's owner was good friends with the owner's of BTJ...

It just sucks...
Numerous reps including 18' female albibo burm, and numerous 8' burms and boas, not to mention the numerous baby birds (macaws, cockatoos, cockatiels, etc), and the 25 puppies they had just received for customers for X-Mas...

Absolutely horrible.. I hope all of us (the other local, private pet shops) have some sort of fundraiser for them... This is a big loss, not only in animal life, but monetarily also, I hope they had a solid insurance...

Sad indeed...for all involved
This should serve as a reminder to all of us, that we are using heat, and electricity to keep our herps warm...and used improperly, this could happen to any of us.
Not that that's what started the fire...just a reminder to always be mindful of the conditions.
