New owner of beardies, possible problem?

natema Dec 19, 2004 11:38 AM

Hi everyone. I just got 2 beardies yesterday and today it looks as though the female(?) is shedding. I had been under the impression that they only shed when they are full grown. She is only 2 1/2 inches long in body so I believe she is only a few months old. Any insight?

Beardies will shed from babies all the way into adulthood. They have to lose the old skin as they grow. Nothing for you to worry about. They'll shed over & over & over.

Thanks, Cricket. I was reading all over the place that it wasn't supposed to happen until adulthood.

Actually they shed much more as babies than adults. Nothing to worry about and it's quite normal for them to seem like they are in an almost constant shed when they are young.

Bearded dragons, in fact all reptiles and amphibians, all shed frequently, especially while young. It is how they grow. Once they get too big for their skin/scales they shed to allow for growth. Once they reach adulthood, the amount of shedding slows down to as little as one or two times a year.
