What type of Boa for first?

TallTex Dec 19, 2004 01:42 PM

I want to get a second snake and am considering getting a boa. I currently own a spotted python, which was my first snake ever. I would prefer a snake that doesn't get any longer than 7 or 8 feet at the most, tolerates handling well, and is visible in their cage, not like a sand boa that can't be seen. Any information that anyone can share as far as recommendations is appreciated.

Thanks!

A colombian bci boa or common boa. This is the most kept boa. They are easy to handle (buy a baby 6 months or younger) and are fairly easy to care for. The males usally top out at 6ft. females average 7ft to 8ft. You can buy one for around a 100 dollars. And they display nicely.

My first boa was a common Colombian "red tail boa." I think they're kinda like the golden retriever of the snake world, big and friendly. Sometimes too big though, mine was a female and I had to give her away when she outgrew my closet. If you can handle an 8 foot boa, you'll do fine with a Colombian.

I have 3 smaller boas now. Hog island boas are my favorite and top recommendation. They are colorful, mellow, not too expensive, and don't usually get over six feet. One of mine went to reptile club with me this evening and was handled by at least a dozen children. Charlotte is a reptile club veteran now, and always does great.

I have to agree with all the information... BCI's are awesome pets.. the males will stay nice and small for you (6-7ft) and they have the best temperment. Hogg islands are also great! beautiful colors a little smaller in size and easy to handle and care for.The only piece of infomation i wanted to add to this thread is to make sure you buy from a good breeder. Someone who produced the animal and can give you first hand advice and all the animals background. You will be more than grateful to have someone to ask questions to and to answer all your thoughts and concerns about the boa. Also you might think you could skimp and get the better deal from a wholesaler but i would always spend the extra 20 bucks to buy from the person who produced the animal.. Its worth it in the long run.

Good luck with you Boa... You'll love um'
Sincerely,
Rose Hipskind
