Iridescent colubrids?

Eidechsemann Dec 19, 2004 02:56 PM

Just curious, are there any iridescent colubrids out there?

If you're talking about the rainbow sheen- then a number of colubrids have it. The best example I can think of is the Sumbeam snake, Xenopeltis unicolor. Probably the most iridescent snake out there. My African House snakes also exhibit some iridescence. You can see a little sheen on these two pics.

Mexican black kingsnakes produce a lively rainbow effect in sunlight.

I have read in some literature that all snakes exhibit iridecence to some extent. it is actually caused by the shape of the scales, and its ability to sperate the spectrum of colours in white light. It is the background color of the snake that determines to what extent the snake is iridescent. One colubrid that exhibits this greatly is the indigo snake. Most darkly colored snakes like this exhibit the spectrum, like the indigo.
