new rough green snake owner

imaturtlefan Dec 19, 2004 03:09 PM

I have several years of experience with many reptiles, and amphibians, but this is my first snake. Its a rough green snake, I was wondering if anyone out there has them, and if I could get any advice. I have him quarantined in a different room from the rest of my reptiles, I have heat and uvb lighting on him, in an aboreal setup with branches. I do not have a substrate in the bottom of the cage yet, what works best? Spaghnum moss maybe? What do you have the best luck feeding them, crickets? I put some wax worms in there, but I just brought him home today, so I dont actually expect him to eat. Also, he doesnt seem to mind being handled, he seems pretty calm, but I have read that they shouldnt be handled much, is this just due to size, and they should be handled very carefully? Thanks for any advice.

Here's a link to a thread I was a part of a few weeks ago that discussed the topic.

I don't pretend to be an expert, but it's what I do.

ok, thanks for the info... a lot of the stuff Ive read has been contradicting also. So is it your belief that they cannot/should not be tamed? I have handled mine several times, and it does seem just a tad skittish at first, but calms down quite quickly, then mostly just seems curious. The very first time I picked it up, it did musk, just a tad, but thats it, it hasnt since. I do understand that they must be handled very gently, due to size and build though.

I'm definitely under the impression that mine do not like to be held one bit. They don't try to bite or slither away. They try to leap... it's the weirdest thing. So I leave them be as much as possible. If I need, to grab them to move them out of their cage so I can clean it... That's one thing. But to hold them for my enjoyment? That's another.

I have heard of people having Green Snakes that were more calm, but primarilly I think they were captive hatched.

But I have a veiled chameleon that never bites or hisses and doesn't seem to mind being held. That's completely contrary to what I've read about them. And I have a corn snake that manages to bite you every time you pick him up. That's completely contrary to what I've read about them. So I really believe tameness depends on the individual animal.
