HEALTH QUESTION

twilightfade212 Dec 19, 2004 05:25 PM

About two weeks ago my snake had five doses of Baytril to treat what was thought to be the beginning of a respiratory infection. Today I watched my snake puff his throat up again. Any way the medicine didn't work or has yet to take effect? Any way it's doing it since it feels intimidated? He is eating. Thanks so much.

Can you hear the snake wheezing when it breathes? Was his throat looking similar when he was diagnosed with RI? Have you cranked the heat on the warm end of its cage? I would keep a sharp eye on him Tom Stevens

Yes, I can hear him make a noise when the throat puffs, but not every time it happened. This started when I was handling him in the house (about 70 degrees), but once I put him back in the tank (about 75-80 degrees), I saw him do it little if at all. His throat was doing the same thing before the medicine was given to him, but it didn't happen but a few times, but it was warmer then. I will have to make the tank warmer for him, thanks for the advice. Will definately keep a sharp eye on him. Any other suggestions that come to mind are welcome. Thanks so much.

I am guessing he needs more medication. However if you make one small spot in his cage extremely warm he may have its own immune system kick in and get him back on track form the lingering meds in him allready. Make sure he has access to a cooler spot as well, that is extremely important as heat may not be the answer, the snake will decide what temp is most comfortable at but better call the vet for advice, hopefully others will chime in here on the forum. Thanks once again. Everyone else is also welcome to tell me what they think. Happy Holidays everyone.

I thought of this question right after I finished the previous post. I will make a considerably warmer spot for the snake to try and fix the problem, so how long should I have it? I'm guessing until it shows improvement. Thanks again.
