Bambina Maxima w/pebble in throat

joediterry Dec 19, 2004 05:27 PM

Please help! My toad has a pebble lodged in his throat. he is breathing ok, but the stone is pretty far down... i can't get him to open his mouth, and not sure i could reach the pebble anyway. any advice? i think it is too large for him to be able to pass it through. i want him to be as comfortable as possible. he has periodically tried to vomit it out, but seems to have ceased doing that, at least for the time being.
any information/ suggestions would be much appreciated. i really love this toad. thanks.

How do you know its lodged in his throat if you can't open his mouth? It is probably in his stomach and if he can't pass it or throw it up the only way he is going to live is if you get him to a vet.

I know it's in there, because he was trying to vomit it out earlier, and I could see it in the back of his throat when he opened his mouth. When we picked him up to try to aid him in getting it out, he closed his mouth, and wouldn't release.
I do have a call in to our local exotic vet, he's not in until tomorrow. I am just hoping to do what I can for him in the meantime. Hopefully, I am wrong about his ability to get it out.
Thanks for the help.

I am happy to report that our Bombina Maxima ("Maximo," has received a clean bill of health from the exotic vet. Did you know that toads are able to essentially turn their stomachs inside out? Neato. We have switched out his substrate-- small pebbles out, big river rocks in. He is very happy.
