Fluid retention in Tortoises...

stephieB Dec 19, 2004 09:01 PM

Hi Everyone,
I wondered if anyone could ease my mind with some information. I recently took both my Horsefields to the vet as only a year old tortoise keeper and eager to care for them well. I had thought that the younger who is about a year/year and a half old, had put on a bit of weight recently but took this for over-eating.
However my vet said he was a bit bloated due to fluid retention and said this can sometimes be down to kidneys/ liver not working properly. He didnt seem concerned or say it was fatal in anyway, but every site Ive read online says that fluid retention is due to renal failure and that the best possible action is to put the animal down...
Does anyone know if this is true???? please tell me its not.... or if there is anything I can do at all to help remedy the situation....

Ta Steph...

Find another Vet as soon as you can. Renal failure (if that is indeed whats going on) is certainly not always fatal and often times reversible to some degree once the root of the problem has been found and resolved.
If you decide to take the animal to the vet again get a complete blood workup as well as a parasite screen (in particular looking for Hexamita).
Don't give up hope unless your particular animal has been properly diagnosed with end stage renal failure.
