I work at PetSmart and we had an African Side-necked turtle in an 55 gallon setup. It had a UV bulb and basking light. He was eating a diet of reptile sticks and Rosey Red feeders and also some crickets. I bought him a few weeks ago and brought him home as a gift for my boyfriend for Christmas. I have him in a 29 gallon (I know it's a little small, but I plan on getting him a new tank as soon as finances allow.) He has a 60 watt heat lamp on one end of the cage and a water heater turned to 82 degrees in the tank. I didn't have a UV light on him when I first brought him home because he was living in my roommate's closet and I wasn't able to put it in there. I have one on there now thought because I had to move the tank due to difficulty cleaning it where it was. HIs water is filtered and he has a substrate of aquarium sand and a basking area made of stacked rocks. I also put a plastic plant in his water area because he had one when he was at work and liked to lay under it. I'm feeding him the same diet with the addition of a frozen aquatic turtle food once a week. However, he doesn't seem to be eating. I put some crickets in the tank and bought mealworms to try to stimulate his appetite, but he doesn't seem to want any of it. Recently he's spent a lot of time out of the water basking and I turned up the heater to 82 thinking that his water may have been too cold. I came home from work today and he is in his water, but he seems to be floating in the corner and sort of tilted to the side with his head sticking out. I never noticed this behavior before and in fact I didn't even thing turtles could float. He was always either basking or on the bottom under his plant. I'm not very experianced with turtles, so I'm not sure if this is a normal thing or not. I'm very worried because I'm afraid that my inexperiance is going to kill him. And because I really don't want to give my boyfriend and empty tank for Christmas! I don't know if I will be able to get him a vet appointment or not because of it being so close to the holiday. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? And is there anything I can do for him? Please help!
