well neosporin you can use but if there is no open wound it wouldnt do any good, antibiotics might work...but IDK wait for sean or someone to post as they have alot more experiance than me

heartmountain Dec 20, 2004 09:36 AM

It could be anything from a sprain to MBD, I don't know and without knowing any history you wouldn't either. I'd get it a vet visit for a wellness check and a fecal exam just like any other new dragon. He/She's a looker, congrats.

MBD= Metabotic Bone Disease. It is caused by lack of calcium in the diet. When there isn't enough calcium injested the body leaches calcium from the bones which weakens them over time. Also note with bearded dragons, they need Vitamine D3 to properly utilize the calcium in their diet.

The only certain way to ensure the injury to the rescue's leg is take her to a qualifed reptile vet. A picture would be helpful but again, it is nothing like an actualy physical exam. Even if there is no MBD or open injury, infection or broken, cracked bones can still cause problems. It would be better for the animal to be put down humanely than have it suffer an injury that goes untreated for a long period of time.

See, I agree with you on that. But this person says they got her from someone who was abonding it at a pet store. My brother worked at PetsMart and he worked in the reptile center. Well everytime they had something that needed to be put down, they put it in the freezer. Which is not only inhumane but it's against company policy.

We rescued a zebra finch that a lady brought into his store, his boss told him to put it in the freezer, he didn't. Lady said it's neck was broke, total lie. The day after he brought it home it's head was right side up.

I think that what this person is doing is great, the fact they resuced a troubled bearded. Taking it to the vet is a great idea. Maybe you could call and ask what it sounds like if you don't wanna pay maybe they'll be willing to take it off of your hands and not put her down.

Good luck with the bearded.

If it is just an injury or infection in the leg, a good vet can determine the proper course of action.
I think that putting it down at this time would be way too hasty. Find out what the problem is first.
I have a rescue that had an infection in her leg. The infection apparently remained and even got worse after the surface wound healed. They amputated the lower part of her leg.
She also had MBD and still has a little bit of a crooked mouth but she is doing fine now.

I'd just get ahold of your vet and run it through for an exam. I don't know how much it will cost but it can't be too much (my vet comps most of my exams but I still have to pay for any meds). From the sounds of it I don't think that it would be serious enough to have to put it down, at least not without diagnosing what's wrong and attempting to treat it.

He's using another Dragon's picture as what he is calling his signature (I think KS has a rule about that you might be voilating and want to check out)

It just looks like he is talking about the dragon pictured. The dragon in that picture he has had for several months as his upload site shows older pcitures of her at various ages.

With no open wound, I would guess it's something like a sprain since she is still using it. It is possible it is an infection inside the leg too. The only way you will really know is to make a vet visit. Even though you got it for free, it still deserves treatment. A dragon you paid for is just as worthy of medical attention as a free one, especially since you decided to bring it home and take responsibility for it.
Good Luck..

I agree!! I got 4 free beardies over the years but have spent a small fortune on Vet care. Best of luck to you both and I really hope s/he will start to thrive!

Please take it to the vet. I have a bearded I took in that im dealing with a fungus. She has cost me over $400 in vet bills and meds thus far and im still having problems. Im a college student and have next to no money but have found ways to pay for it. If you take in an animal, you take in the responsibilities that come with it. IM glad you took her in and kept her from being killed. That was a very kind thing you did. Goodluck.

If the beardie in that picture is the one that was left at the pet store, I do not see the right front leg swelling... may be there, but I do not see it in that picture.

Chances are the person that dropped if off knows what is wrong or what happened and can not afford the vet care it needs and assumed that a pet store has a vet they take animals too.

Her mouth looks normal, her toes have no knots or inflammed joints I can see, so although she may have a form of MBD, its not showing the visual symptoms you would see or other things like eating well.

BITES: dragon to dragon bites, often do not show a puncture area as the scales move back over it, sometimes heal, but if it gets infected, it forms like a pus sac under the skin and that has to be lanced and drained.

INJURY: something may have fallen on the leg, she jumped and landed wrong or even a child bending/breaking it trying to hold onto a dragon trying to get away. Again it needs medical care, breaks are painful, especially if they are not aligned.

This picture looks like a healthy well cared for dragon, I think chances are high the owner knew it needed medical care and could not afford it this time of year.

If you can not afford it, let me know what area you are in and I will see if one of the vets we work with can see her... she need it looked at asap
