Question concerning Rusty Ratsnakes.

hermanbronsgeest Dec 20, 2004 02:34 AM

I'm hearing different stories about the genetics of Rusty Ratsnakes, and I find this very confusing. One guy told me that it is a naturally occuring variant and that the trait is inherited as a codominant gene. Another person told me that it is just the heterozygous expression of the recessive leucistic trait. Now, which one is true? I like the Rusty Ratsnake very much and I'd really like to combine it with the blotchless or the whitesided trait. I know a guy who sells Rusty Rats, but if it's just a heterozygous for leucistic animal than I can make my own. So should I buy them or not?

Greetings,

Herman Bronsgeest.

Thanx for the info. I like the rusty very much, but I just had to be sure that it's a distinct trait. Eventually, but it will take many years to accomplish this, I would like to breed a blotchless whitesided rusty ratsnake. I'm pretty sure that this has not been done before. Just imagine a whitesided ratsnake with a patternless red back...
