Hidebox behavior

legless Dec 20, 2004 12:33 PM

I'm about 24 hours away from having a new BRB, my first, and have a question about hidebox behavior. Specifically: if and how to get the snake out of a hidebox.

Will it make the snake nervous or less secure if I lift the hidebox off it? I don't want to find out the hard way, by having the snake be afraid both of me *and* the hidebox.

(My "hideboxes" are actually upside-down terracotta trays, the kind you put under pots. They're big enough to totally cover the snake, and I cut an opening in each so she can get inside. One on the warm side, one on the cool side.)

Thanks!

I've never had a problem. I use the plastic variety with a hole cut on top on the cooler side of the cage, and a waterdish that doubles as a hide on the warmer side. The young ones might think you want to eat them when you lift their hide...but they soon learn otherwise and accept the routine. I also use layers of folder newspaper for adults...they seem comfortable being able to slide under and between the substrate.
Good luck with your new addition, Chris O
