HELP! Blood in stool/urine?

vamppire Dec 20, 2004 01:40 PM

I just noticed fresh waste in the tank and there is blood in it! My uro is a baby Ornate, I've had him for 1 month, and this is the first time it has looked like this. He is acting completely normal (basking, running around, etc) and is eating fine as usual (diet is supplemented endive and escarole). He is on vinyl tile substrate and his temperatures are fine.

What could cause this? Should I be very alarmed? (I am!) Should I only be worried if it continues to happen? Please help!

I'd call the vet, and if the vet can get him in today, I suggest doing so. I've never seen anything like that with any of my animals.

The only thing I could GUESS is that he somehow got ahold of something bad for him. JUST A GUESS.

I still think the vet's the best thing for him at this point.

Thanks - bad as in, something hard/sharp, or bad as in, toxic?

Do parasites ever cause blood?

Bad as in maybe he got a worm that crawled into his cage. I mean it is that time of the year that insects invade your house to keep warm.

Not that I am aware of but I'm not a professional.

Hmm, I live on the 7th floor of an Apt buildling in NYC.. Don't think any creepy crawlers couldve come in from outdoors.. unless there was something in one of the plants in the room. *sigh*

The vet is booked up today, but I just made an appt. for tomorrow evening.

You think you do everything right for these little guys, but you can never seem to prevent things like this anyway =(

He's showing NO signs of anything abnormal, hes very active and was just eating, so I'm sure hoping this is not life-threatening or that he is in pain or anything. I've dealt with too much loss this past month (different causes)... I really don't want another.

Thanks a bunch for the help.

well if he is eating and acting normal, then he is most likely fine, as long as he is treated soon. i know how you feel though, you work and work but you can never do everything right. i am sure he will get better with no problem

THis is my guess, of course there are so many things, but cocidida is very common in reptiles. And here is a brief discription of symptoms
*****************************************************

Visible Symptoms
A severe infestation can cause bleeding from the digestive system walls (most commonly seen as bloody stools), resulting in weakness caused by anemia from the internal bleeding, metabolic poisoning from an overload of parasites (which produce toxic waste material), displacement of food (the parasites utilize most or all of the hosts food , resulting in malnutrition) - the most commons visible signs being weakness, lethargy or dramatic weight loss.

Another common visible syptom is very loose and VERY smelly stools.

I would certainly consult a Vet on this, as blood in the stool is always a sign of something not quite right ! Hope he will be fine . Let us know how he makes out!

Okay, the vet did the float test and she discovered he has worms, so he has started a deworming treatment. Need to go back once a week for the next few weeks and she will retest then. She said he looks healthy otherwise.

So heres hoping for a speedy recovery!

Thanks so much everyone!

Good job on paying attention and noticing the problem before it got bad! Best of luck with the treatments - I'm sure will go well!

Be extra sure he doesn't get dehydrated during treatment. Some medications will dry them out, if I remember correctly. Make sure he's eating his greens (no crickets until meds are done), and do a couple of soaks if you feel you should.

Let us know how it goes!

I am not very knowledgeable about worms but do recall being told that Magnus was treated prior to when I received him as a standard practice of the store.

He was a W/C Uro who came from my pet shop and was 8" at the time but I did not know his age.

Some questions:

-is there usually a certain age when de-wroming is done?

-any difference if WC or CB?

-do breeders usually have this taken care of before shipping?

Vampire... do you know how old your Ornate is or length? Keep us updated! he/she is a beauty!!!
