hygrometer "probes"

Carlton Dec 20, 2004 03:32 PM

Hi all,

There was a short discussion about combination thermometer and hygrometer gauges that had a remote probe. Remember, for most of these types of meters the probe DOES NOT measure relative humidity! It measures temperature only. To monitor humidity you have to put the entire gauge in the cage and leave it there! This isn't all that clear until you buy the unit and read the instructions. The manufacturer is not misleading you, they are often advertised carelessly. To get a portable gauge that does measure both temp and humidity quickly you need a different type of instrument. I have one that I like but for the price it is probably not super precise. Yes, precise ones will cost you $150 . They are used for measuring the moisture levels of crops and wildfire fuels in the field. If anyone is interested you can find them at http://www.benmeadows.com and look for item 4JE-222010 and item 4JE-70956.
