herping in florida in winter

wayne13114 Dec 20, 2004 03:53 PM

I was wondering if you can still find herps in fl this time of year, I'm talking anything, cause I'm about to move south for the winter and wanted to know if I should bring my camera.
Thanks
Wayne

Bullfrogs are still very active down here. They are not ectothermic, so they stay active year round. Also, I saw a Gopher turtle yesterday which seems really odd this time of year. Other than aquatic frogs, I think anything else you find will be brumating.

Thanks for the help, I guess I'll bring it just in case. when do they usually come out of brumation?

I think the time they emerge depends mainly on the weather. When it's warm again in spring, they come out. Sometimes when we get a false warm spell, I've seen stuff emerge early and die from cold when it got cold again. And here's a picture of one of the bullfrogs that are still active.

i just got back from a trip to the keys, and they just had a day that was forecast to be the record low since the 70's and it was only in the low 60's at the high! anyway, it was still a good day to go herping. everything was still out since it was a sunny day, and since they were so cool they were sluggish and tame for pics and easy to catch! im about to post a bunch of pics from the trip here.
