My New $55.00 Spengleri's Already Dead. HELP.

TackyTurtle Dec 20, 2004 06:18 PM

I Purchased 1.1 G.Spengeri's from a dealer who was advertising in one of the forums. Right from the get go the female showed signs of illness, I ran her to the vet who only prescribed panacure. She died a week later. I contacted the miami dealer, who would only offer me a discount on a new one, so i took a chance, and purchased another female. She too showed signs of illness, i contacted the dealer within the 5 days, and unlike his 5day quarentee promised, he refused to honor his word. she is now dead. the vet offered to put her to sleep which would have hit me up for another $80.00. Now for the male he is ill but alive, refuses to eat, and his eye seems cloudy like cateracs. he is very inactive? But he is not expelling blood and worms like the 2 females i recieved were? any suggestions?

You need to find a reputable vet that specializes in turtles. WC spengleri can be a royal pain to acclimate. They can harbor many parasites that many "vets" (in my experience) cannot correctly identify and or treat. When you have fecals done, ask for both a direct fecal and a float. I also recommend bloodwork being done as well. I have several in my freezer that didn't make it. As for the survivors, I have had to tube feed many of them, and they have been prescribed all sorts of medications.

Second, I am very hesitant to buy any WC asian turtles this late in the season. I have purchased 25 or so spengleri, 15 in the spring and 10 in the fall. The animals bought in the spring are all thriving. The fall purchased animals are all dead. I have talked to several other keepers with the same experiences.

55 Dollars seems on the inexpensive side for nice acclimated adults. Theres probably a reason.

Sorry that you are learning about the spengs the hard way. Getting WC spengs or any asian turtle at that can be a painful (both emotional and financial) experience.

If you would like to talk further about anything, feel free to email me offline.

I have heard the same thing regarding Asian turtle hardiness bought in the Spring vs Fall. I am looking into getting a small breeding group together (10-15) and have been purposely waiting until next spring for this reason.

Steve: Can you email me at bigturtlegeek@aol.com? Just want to get some dealer recommendations, thanks.
