Best Cage Set up?

Tugi Dec 20, 2004 07:27 PM

Whats the best cage set up for an adult 5.5 foot texas rat snake? I went to buy him a nice glass front wood cage that was 3 feet high, 2.5 feet long and 2.5 feet wide. From what I've read they are arborial and like to climb, but the person at the store said they aren't and that I should stick him in a long fish tank. Whats the best cage set up for him? Money isn't an issue, nor is space.

First of all - thanks for spending the time and effort to get that big guy a nice proper cage setup.

Texas rats LOVE to climb. However, you don't need a particularly tall cage in order to satisfy that demand.

I think an ideal setup would be a 55 gallon aquarium. 48" long, and plenty high enough to put some large wood pieces in for him to climb around on. I think you will definently want a tank that is longer than 30" for him, and it will be much easier on you as far as cleaning. They do spend most of their time on the ground, probably in a hide box, but definently will make use of and enjoying climbing branches. Mine would even wrap up and spend hours just hanging on one.

Post a pic of what you end up with completed! G'luck
