New York Law

Kirsch Dec 20, 2004 08:01 PM

I live in N.Y. State and did everything I could to fight this law (letter writing, informing others, etc) and am very distraught over this. I have two Burms, a regular phase and an albino, as well as a red-tailed boa and savannah monitor. I am a responsible owner of all these animals, no one even knows I have them unless I show or tell them, they have their own room in my basement, that I built for them and are well taken care of. So now I guess I have to pay a license fee or get rid of them what a joke. I also am a member of the Buffalo chapter of R.A.R.E (reptile adoption rehabilitation education) but some suit in Albany knows what's best for me and my family. I would let anyone of them see my reptiles and dare them to find anything wrong and if they did I don't deserve to have them. What happens when I decide to rescue another burm or monitor are they going to tell me I can't. Please whatever you do don't let this happen to you and your state. Sorry for venting I'm just going crazy with all of this B.S. I guess I have a problem with authority.

"problem with authority",yup,me too!! I wouldn't even apply for the permit, the Gov's probably just using that to find out who has big snakes,so they can confiscate them!!I don't believe the "one JFK asassin" story either!!See,told you I had a problem!LOL!!

is the fact that most every animal they sieze will be put down due to lack of facilitys willing to care for them. Why would they do such a thing? Why take an animal in good care away from it's owner just because they dont have a lisence to care for them?? The right thing to do would be sieze all animals in poor care, find it a good home and grant respectable owners the RIGHT to a lisence, not pay a fee. Even though I'm not a resident of New York, I wish there was something meaningful I could do to help, if anyone has good ideas please post up, I'm sure these laws will hit the other states very soon and I won't have my animals taken and euthanized period. Anyway here's a new pic of my boys...

I live in NJ so I am scared that we are next for this law. I just recently sent away for my permit application. I agree though that it is probably just a way to get the names and addresses of the people with "dangerous animals". I'm affraid to even go through with it but I want to be as legal as I can, you know.

They can come to my house and will need to arrest me to take my boys.

The only pet you will have to get a permit for is the Burmese Pythons. They made an amendment to the bill because Pataki wouldn't sign it as it was written before. Red-tails are not one of the needing permit reptiles. Neither is the Savannah.

I contacted my New York assemblyman last week because I was concerned about the bill in regards to it mentioning something about the way Reptiles will need to be kept is changing, but was told they haven't promulagated the rules yet and that for now the Animal Welfare Act is what I need to follow in regards to my Red-tail, 2 Ball Pythons, Dumerils Boa, Iguana and Leopard Gecko. So I looked up the Animal Welfare Act and on the very first page it says that Cold-Blooded reptiles are not included in the act. So much for being able to follow the law... lol. I am worried that they will nto contact someone that truely knows how to take care of these animals and talk to someone like the HSUS, which will make it almost impossible to keep them since they are against keeping Reptiles in the first place.

So I guess we will have to sit and wait for them to figure out the law and at the same time figure it out ourselves. Where in N.Y. do you live? I will not stop caring for my Burms and if I want to buy or rescue another one oh well. I also own a pitbull so I guess they will love coming to my house to say look at this crazy person with all these unsafe animals. It isn't the animal but the way it is raised and cared for that makes it a problem. You need to care for these animals knowing that they are possibly dangerous but if you take the proper precautions the experience of owning them is remarkable. Thanks for the support.

I live in Steuben County. Down in the Southern Tier section of NY. Yep, we have to wait unfortunetly to see what off the wallcare instructions they come up with for us to take care of the animals that we have been doing for many many years before these stupid laws were ever drempt up.

I am from Buffalo, I don't think it's too far from Stuben County. I guess this is going to be one of those laws that the bend around to fit a bunch of different circumstances to make the lawmakers feel like they have done something for their salaries.

There is another bill that may be re-introduced this upcoming session that makes it illegale to sell animals (excluding reptiles) under the age of 8 weeks. This includes rodents, no mention if feeders are exempt, so as of this time I read that as they are included. That means no more pinkies for feeding Corns and other small snakes as well as some lizards. No more hoppers or fuzzies either. Also included in that bill is another blow against the reptile hobby. It will make illegal to sell a snake that obtains an adult length of over 8 foot. I don't remember the bill number, but it is included in with laws to regulate dog and cat breeders. here was no interest in it last session and my wife doesn't think the part with the snake size will make it in the final draft, especially after what was said in the amendment of the recently passed bill. Most people call it the pet dealer bill.

This is just in N.Y. State right? How would this affect the frozen feeder market? I think we should come up with a law to go against the lawmakers. Its almost like they are putting ideas on a dartboard and whatever they hit goes into effect.

lonegreywolf20 Dec 23, 2004 07:49 PM

Yep, it's only in NYS. I don't think it will affect the frozens, but for people like me, I have 2 Balls that won't take anything, but live. I have tried for weeks to get them to switch, but it just will not happen. At least the mice I buy are over 8 weeks old, but Corn Snake owners who feed pinkies and or Leopard Gecko owners or Veiled Chameleon owners who feed pinkies may have trouble.
