Great Stuff Foam Alternative?

WhisQuila Dec 20, 2004 09:07 PM

Ok... i read somewhere in the Arrow frog forum that there is a non toxic type of foam that is used in fish ponds that won't break down like this "Great Stuff" will when exposed to water and humidty and what not.

Anyone know what its called?

here is the URL of the arrow frog forum post

Be extremely careful when using anything like this with frogs. As you well know they are extremely sensitive to anything foreign. Almost anything that is unnatural to the frog can cause issues. I only have a few frogs in my collection but anything that says non-toxic, etc. I stay away from since if someone has to indicate it as non-toxic that spells trouble.

The Arrow frog forum was the place i found it.
I'm thinking of setting up my former Knight Anole cage (r.i.p. little buddy) into a Tokay Gecko cage... er... terrerium.
Its a big thing made out of MDF (water protected by contact paper, won't go that route again) with sliding glass doors. 2ft deep, 4ft wide, and 4ft tall. looks something like this.

I'm going to make it all "rough" on the inside with the foam... have some shelves, cliffs, and even try to have the little water fall i had in the corner actually become part of the enclosure... just not sure the easiest way to hide the pump for easy access. I'm thinking maybe hidden reservoir outside of the cage. Probably in the storage area if i can manage that.

Anyway the idea is to have the bottom covered in cyprus mulch, with some potted pothos that wrap around tree branches, already cleaned and disinfected those a long time ago. It'll have some branches that dig into the foam on the walls and go horizontally... and i guess i'm going to have to find some good fast growing plant besides pothos cuz it looks a little too plain with only them in there... and by looks i mean in my head.

Anyway... i found out from the arrow frog forum that its "Beckett Water Fall Foam Sealant". Now i just need to figure out how much each can holds.

i plan to use expanding foam in some frog enclosures, but im going to paint them and then seal the foam with marine epoxy. i know there is probably a cheaper sealant, but i like how thick and hard the epoxy dries. i forsee no problem with this, but if anyone knows of one let me know.
i have a link to expanding foam before it is put in the can. it is a two part mix. way cheaper that way.

that means there are no Volitile Organic Compounds.

I've done some tests also with water, a bit of the foam and
found it doesn't change the pH or leach.

You can cover it with silicone (GE2) and then cover that with any substrate materials or use Vivarium Mortar and make some nice rockwork.

I use it to build both, the strata and cliffs as well as parts of the water feature. I have used it also to hold hardscape; wood or rock, in place from time to time. it's a great product.
just hard to find.

great stuff is toxic when in contact with water, that's proven by reading the Hazardous Material Data Sheets. It's says it right there.

the product i suggest is called waterfall foam sealant but Beckett. Most pond building sites sell it but if you can't find it, try Home Depot.

I've been using it for a long time.
I can also prove the Great stuff is bad, to those that say other wise!
