Fish Ideas?

LordOfTheLizards Dec 20, 2004 10:18 PM

Hey there, Im planning on having a large (48"x24"x24" aquarium split in half, where one half will be a basic land setup (with false bottom and such) and the other half (seperated by a sheet of plexiglass) will be all water. There will be a filter, some form of submersible pump feeding a waterfall.

I want to know any suggestions for fish. something low maintenance (no more then feeding and changing the water peridically) and will be good in small groups (3 or 4), and are freshwater.

This is a little drawing I did that somewhat explains the tank. the left hand side is the land area, with a false bottom setup (PVC SPacers, egg crate, gravel, organic potting soil peat moss, then real living moss). And the right hand side is the water area (it will be seperated by a piece of plexiglass will be around half the height of the tank, so it will effectively look like a shoreline) where there will be a water filter, and a pump.

So any fish suggestions would be great,

Thanks

Since this is a dart frog forum, I am guessing the land section is for the dart frogs. Only problem will be when the frogs go in the water, there is a good possibility of them drowning.

I've got 12 Neon Tetras, 3 Hatchet Fish, 1 Blue Ram, 2 Otto cats, 1 cory cat and 2 dwarf claw frogs in my tank along with the frogs.

The dart frogs will not drown, as long as you give them plenty of places to climb out of the water.

I did not say they would definately drown, just a possibility, which there is. The risk is up to you, is all I am saying.

That's a beautiful tank. For me, the small tetras (excluding the neons, which I can never keep more than a few weeks) have done the best. I have rummy-nose, X-ray tetras, head and tail light and some with "bloody fins." I also have Chinese algae eaters in each section either the orange or smaller plain ones. For awhile, I had platys, which bred, but eventually died off entirely after a year or so. I also experimented with adding red clawed crabs (not a good idea, as they get onto the land and bother the frogs), even a small crayfish--also get out of the water. Now, I just stick to the small tetras and algae eaters.
I tried some ADF's as well, but perhaps due to having the red clawed crabs at the same time, these did not thrive. I eventually separated those I didn't lose.

While as was pointed out, there is a possibility that the frogs may fall in and drown, darts are relatively efficient short spurt swimmers and as long as you have an egress such as a log, from tank to land, lots of aquatic plants, I think this is unlikely. If the frog is injured in the process of falling in, that may be a different situation. The dangerous point is when the frogs are first introduced and are all excited, leaping around carelessly. After that, they are pretty cleaver about knowing their own safe boundaries. My galacs will hunt fruit flies that have fallen into the water from the edge, and I've witnessed them actually capturing new-born platy fry.

Maybe you could put in Cloud Mountain Minnows and Zebra Dannios.
