Depressed bearded dragon

kapeed Dec 21, 2004 02:57 AM

Our bearded dragon is about 7 months old. He has been very healthy and has been growing rapidly. He looks alert, responsive, and, for the most part, happy.

We have begun to feel bad for him, because we don't know if he is lonely or in an environment that he likes. His cage is great, and we take him out periodically to play with him and let him run around. The thing is just that he has so much personality and seems very sociable, so we get a little sad sometimes if he has been left alone all day while we are at work.

Would getting another bearded dragon be a good idea? Or are we simply anthropomorphizing his personality traits? Do they interact with each other a lot in the wild? The other thing is that he has begun bbbing his head periodically, so maybe he wants a mate? Any suggestions? We really love him and want him to be happy.

If it were my bearded I'd wait until he gets older to get him a mate. But a big thing you have to remember with a mate is this: you may get unwanted babies if you do not plan on breeding him.

Also bearded's aren't that interactive with one another in the wild so being on their own is normal to them.

If you wanted to get another bearded all together and you know for sure the one you have now is a male you could get a female. But unless you want babies don't keep them together. You could put the female in another terrarium and take her out the same time you take him out so they can get to know one another and maybe run around together.

Those are all suggestions on what to do. If you want another bearded and you want to have baby bearded's then get him (make sure it is a him) a female mate (and make sure she's actually a she).

I wouldn't get too worried until you discover empty bottles of cheap liquor in it's cage.

As with most other reptiles, beardies can be perfectly content to exist by themselves.
