What are going to be doing in Costa Rica?

adamsanity Dec 22, 2004 07:24 PM

well i am going with some family so i will have to see when we are going to do together but we will be going to a few places with jungle/ forest tours and i think anything i want to do i can do, mainly i am interested in photographing animals. I am an art student and i do my bit of photography so i guess this helps to increase my body of work.

whereabouts in costa rica are you going and when? Ive had great luck finding three different sp. of dart frogs in southwestern CR over the last few years. D. granuliferus has been especially hard to find, but we find them anyway! and good luck with pics, its EXTREMELY difficult to get sharp pics of tiny frogs in dim ravines.

i leave tomorrow i'm going to san jose for a few days then moving to montiverde and a few other places. as far as photography goes i'm really excited my only regret is that i only have one lense for my camera. I'm not worried about clear shots though, I have the canon 20d so in low light i'll just boost the iso as high as 3200 if i need to. plus i have a built in flash and a hot foot flash. I'm going to try and take lots of pics on black velvet that is what i did with the pics i took of my frogs.

sounds like you are well prepared. The thing is, is that this is the dry season now, and frogs could be scarce, unless you happen to get a rainshower. if it rains, even if its sloppy and muddy out, ALL THE ANIMALS COME OUT AFTER IT RAINS during the dry season, they are desperate. we found an auratus once in an area where they had previously been undocumented, because we went out during a dry-season shower, and every frog in the area came out. I only bring a wide angle lens and a combination zoom/macro when I travel, so you should be OK. Flash units are a plus too, I never did figure mine out, I was too busy looking for frogs. Look for them hopping around near streams and on the banks of steep ravines, in wet leaf litter. They dont really stray far away from their streams. definately try to zero in on calling males, thats the only way we've ever found D. granuliferous dart frogs, though D. auratus and especially P. vittatus we find in huge colonies hopping everywhere, so that tactic rarely is needed if the frogs are in the area at all. definately post your pics when you get back!

When you are in Monteverde, there is a nice Ranario where you can photograph many frogs with more ease than in the field. D. pumilio will be much easier to find than D. granuliferus as their distribution is much larger and they are in higher densities in larger areas as well. There is an especially interesting huge morph up the mountian from Siquirres. Also, be sure to bring a strong light at night for Hylid etc photography. This time of year unfortunately is the dry season, so you will most likely not find too much in the Pacific as compared to the wet season. If you want to find Dendrobatids, I would focus my energy in the region from Cahuita to Manzanillo, and the Siquirres to Puerto Viejo de la Sarapiqui area as well.

Great!!! I loved it and got lots of great animal shots. Guides will usually be able to point out things that untrained eye would never see.

I really loved it. Lots of cool basilisk pix, bats, frogs, sloth, monkeys. It was a real adventure!!!

Enjoy and let us know how it you liked it!!
