I was reading about paper towels as substrate...

shopunke Dec 21, 2004 09:52 AM

Is this good as a permanent substrate, or should it only be used temporarily?

Sorry, let me introduce myself. My name is Amanda, I am 17 years old and live in Florida. I brought in two Cuban Tree Frogs a year ago as pets and I just love them. One recently passed away but I have gotten a female for the male remaining. Their names are Beady and LadyBella (long story )

Anyhow, for the year/year and a half that I've had these little guys, I've always hated their substrate. It's... oh shoot, I forget the name, but it's dirt. A big brick of dirt that expands with water.

I'm wondering if paper towels would be okay as a permanent substrate because the dirt seems to bother them. Never had any problem with impaction- they pass is very well when injested. But I would assume dirt sticking to your skin is no fun!

Thanks.

Unbleached/undyed paper towels work great as a substrate, as they are easy to replace and it is easy to notice if they are excessively soiled. I personally don't use a substrate; I prefer to use the plain bottom of the tank. The substrate you are using now is probably coconut fiber or "Bed-A-Beast".

Yes! That is the name of it. And also the bottom of the tank sounds good too... But they tend to sleep in the corner and pee a lot, I don't want puddles of pee.

Looks like we're switching to paper towels!

Thanks!
