Best way to heat ground floor.

beckys Dec 21, 2004 01:48 PM

We have a oak plywood tort table, what is the best way to provide heat to the ground? The table is 3ft X 6ft. We will be using mostly cypress mulch, in some trays we will be using large stones and in one we will put timothy hay.
Any other suggestions for different substrates in any of the other trays. I read on one site where they use towels for burrowing? Will they eat an artificial fern? Or can I use a real fern?
Thanks!

If it's green, they'll probably try to eat it. Best to stick with something safe and out of reach.

As for the ground, heat lamps work best in my book. I figure in the wild, the ground gets warm from the sun hitting it, so why not let a flat stone get warm under a heat lamp for them? Your tortoises will adjust their body tempature by moving from the heat lamp to the colder side of the enclosure.

As for burrowing, I just use a an upside down showbox filled with timothy hay.

Good luck!
