Pinworms! How to make sure my leos don't get them again?

-JayDog- Dec 21, 2004 03:16 PM

I just had my two oldest leos diagnosed with Pinworms. They were sharing the same tank until I took them to the vet. Now that they are infected, I have them seperated. I've heard that pinworms come from crickettes. So how can I be sure that any new crix I get don't have pinworms. I've bought all of my crix from the same petco. Would it be better to get crix by delivery by one of those online feeder stores?

Also, my two new juvies were eating the same crix, they are eating like mad and don't seem to have any symptoms. If by chance they do get pinworms, is it something that will go away with time and proper tank cleaning? It seems as if pinworms are a common thing it crix are a carrier.

Ideas?

You should stop buying your crickets at petco and order them from a reputable cricket dealer instead. Petco does not have a good reputation, and there may be a risk of cross-contamination since the Petco employees often handle reptiles and dont wash up before bagging up your crix. Pinworms do not just disappear. Your geckos will need to be treated with a dewormer. Panacur (fenbendazole) is usually given orally at a "dose of 25-50 mg/kg once a week until negative stools are obtained" You can get the meds from your vet. Keep the cages squeaky clean. You should keep an eye on the two that arent showing signs and get them fecal tested if they start to lose weight or act lethargic.

Pinworms don't go away by themselves. They have a direct life cycle which means that they don't need an intermediary host to complete their life cycle. They usually don't cause any serious problems though, so you don't have too much to worry about. I suggest you keep your leos on paper towels or newspaper while you're treating them. That way you can replace the substrate daily to prevent them from reinfecting themselves.
