Should crickets be dusted??

kidcrazee82 Dec 21, 2004 04:31 PM

I have a 2:0 calcium/phos. supplement for carnivourous reptiles. I was wondering if I should dust gut loaded crickets with this before I feed them. I know my iguanas can't process the 2:1 cal/phos. without uva/uvb lights, and I read that cresteds do not need the uva/b lights, and I was wondering if they can still process the extra calcium without the light. I also feed them CGD(no baby food, mixed as the directions say) but my males like the crickets more and I want to make sure they get enough usuable calcium. Thanks in advance -Joe

Yes!! You should definately be dusting the crickets before you feed them off. The calcium powder should be one that contains vitamin D. You don't have to dust the food at every meal and it is not necessary to mix calcium with the CGD. I usually feed dusted crix at every other feeding.

I have been dusting them at every feeding, and I know that I dont need to mix it with CGD. I was just wondering if the crickets are gut loaded if they still need to be dusted. and do they need the uva/b to process the supplement.

They dont need uv light to process the vitamins but they do need vitamin D3 in order to process the calcium. They should be dusted even if they are gutloaded. It is not necessary to feed the crix the actual suppliment although a little calcium in the gutload shouldn't hurt.

I have been mixing some of the CGD into the gutload for the crix and they seem to like it. I figure if the crix taste like the CGD it reinforces that flavor for the geckos.

I would recommend dusting everytime you feed crickets.
