Food for leos

digiport Dec 21, 2004 04:34 PM

I am searching for an optional food for me leo. I currently feed him medium sized crickets. I was wondering if I could start giving him wax worms. They appear to be similar in size Im wondering about the actual body make up of the waxworm and if he can digest it properly.

Wax worms work well as treats and for fattening up thin geckos, but should not be fed as a staple diet. Crickets and roaches are a better idea. I know a lot of breeders who raise their entire leopard colony on mealworms. Mealies turn into beetles and breed very easily, but are high in chitin and may cause impaction if overfed. I give my geckos a mixed insect diet of crickets, mealies, superworms, waxworms, and those little furry worms that come in the cricket box. I hate these stupid furry worms. They've invaded my bug bins.

I guess I should add that Ive been feeding my leo medium sized crickets. He's only a couple months old right now, so would it still be alright to feed him the wax worms?

As long as they're small enough, your gecko shouldn't have a problem with the waxworms.

Well I played it safe and just got crickets. Problem is right now in my area stores are overloaded with large and small but the mediums get bought out fast, so since my gecko is eating mediums its difficult finding food for him and Im just looking for a safe alternative. I just bought him 24 smalls and he gobbled them up so. Few more months and hopefuly I can give him the wax worms, I want him to get a nice fat tail :D

DONT YOU HATE THOSE FURRY WORMS!!! i get them too. and my cricket supplier's web page says "no pest bugs" too. HA. Do you know what they are? they are Dermestid beetle larvae. Dermestid beetles are the "flesh eating" beetles that they use to strip flesh off bones!! and they fly. dont let them turn into beetles or your house will be infested.
