Does breeding influence temperment?

Passport Jul 03, 2003 07:20 AM

Does breeding a male cornsnake bring about changes in his temperment? I've never seen anything written about this but I have seen changes in other types of animals. I'm looking to breed my 4-year old male next year and sure would hate to see him become aggressive as he is the most pleasant snake anyone could own.

Not really sure about this as i am new to corn snakes and only got my first pair at christmas 2002.
Having said that they mated early this year and i had my first clutch in march and my second clutch on 27h June, but my male snake is now totally unapproachfull and vibrates his tail and raises up everytime i have to go into the vivarium. He has become aggressive towards his mate aswell and even on one occasion managed to get her head right down inside his mouth. Luckily i was watching at the time and managed to seperate them.My female was the original b*tch from hell while gravid but seems to finally have calmed down.
Hope it gives you some idea but does not put you off.
Maybe i should remove the male after mating ? I dont know as its my first pair of corns and i only ever kept various types of lizards before the snakes. Anyone got tips for us about breeding and how to keep them before during and after the event ???
Thx guys

Is the male still in with her? If so, you should give them both some peace and quiet in their own tanks now. It will reduce stress on them (and you, from what you posted!) and, if he has completed his "task" there is no good reason to keep them together, and lots of reasons to separate them. Good luck, and enjoy. Duffy

My wife has just got a new job with the army so i am having to sell all my pets as we will be moving constantly for some years to come. A friend of mine runs a reptile shop locally so he has agreed to put them up til they are sold so they are in seperate vivs now. Thx for the advice though as i have always read its ok to keep them together as a breeding pair.
That still leaves me with hopefully 7 babies in 50 days time.
Anyone wanting a new corn lemme know if in UK maybe we can sort something out
Thx
