russian tortoise cage?

pharoh08 Dec 21, 2004 07:13 PM

would a indoor cage of 8'x either 18" or 24" be big enough for 2 russian torts?

what kinda special phycical care do they need, like toe nails trimmed or anything, i've been researching their care and stuff but have seen very little on that.

Yes 8'x18"-24" would be OK for two russians.

For general care try www.russiantortoise.org

I've never had to trim the nails on my tortoises, but I also keep them outdoors about 6 months a year, where they do a lot of digging. They will scrape and scratch around while indoors, and this may keep their nails short.

As for beaks, I've had to do that a couple times, but only with males for some reason. It seems that if I feed them tough, chewy food items like grass, weeds, a little carrot and squash, their beaks are fine. If they get lots of soft greens and pellets, even if fed on a piece of slate, the beaks get long.

So try to provide some flat pieces of rock/slate/tile in the pen. Provide some tough foods. And if they need a trim of either nails or beaks, go to the vet the first time, see how the vet does it, and then you'll feel comfortable the next time it comes up.
