Books, etc. for homeschool curriculum?

Jeannie May 15, 2003 06:03 PM

I'm going to be homeschooling my son for 7th/8th grade in a year. I'd like to do a unit on herpetology/herpetoculture (since I have a built-in lab, lol). Does anyone have advice on texts, websites, etc. He's an advanced reader, so high school or college texts would be OK if not too dry.

Thanks for any help!

Boy scout badge requirements are excellent study sources for home school curriculums on a wide variety of subjects.

is a text by a herp professor I adored in college... a bit dry, but would be a good starting point. Prentice Hall's college level "Herptology", 2nd Edition. Have fun!

First, a solid base in Biology and Zoology. There are a number of good texts for that. I'm not sure if they are all still in print, but some are:

Worlds within Worlds An Introduction to Biology. It's a college level text by Thomas C. Emmel from The University of Florida, published by Harcourt Brace.

Exploring Biology by Pamela S. Camp and Karen Arms is an advanced High school level text published by CBS College Publishing

The Study of Biology (this one is probably out of print) by Baker-Allen. Published by Addison-Wesley. Excellent basic coverage of cellular biology.

Then a good book on basic Herpetology is Herpetology by Goin, Goin, Zug. W.H. Freeman Publishing Company. There are several editions to this text.

There are several more recent texts on the subject of Herpetology. One website that's worth checking out is www.krieger-publishing.com.

I was homeschooled from kindergarten through high school, and I couldn't be happier with my parent's decision. I graduated from college with honors before I turned 20. I am now 23 and have a great career and and getting married in two weeks. Keep up the good work!
