New short tail owner, I have a question regarding weight, please help!

FireDrake Dec 21, 2004 09:53 PM

I got a baby Borneo Short Tail today for Christmas, she is very pretty, but knowing little about short tails, I cant help but think she is small and skinny. She was said to have hatched in August and she weighs 114 grams, is this normal? If so, how much does a newly hatched short tail weigh? I guess I was expecting a larger snake. She has a prominant backbone too.
Hopefully she'll take food from me in a few days.
Thanks!!
Sarah

Hey,
Considering the fact that most Red Bloods, at hatching, weigh somewhere in the nature of 75-100g at birth, it would put your baby at about the right weight for it's species, considering that Borneo's and Sumatran short-tails, are slightly smaller at birth than Red Bloods. As for the prominent spine, that is a normal and typical characteristic of the species which would also include, the Red Bloods and SST's.

Weekly feedings of a medium sized mouse, depending on the size of the short-tail, would be a good starting point.

I have some babies that grew real slow at first, and others that should be called hogs. Maybe yours is on the smaller side right now, but she looks really nice. If you start feeding her good, she should grow up to be a nice large borneo. Best of luck with her. Nice Christmas present!....greenman

Cause you got my present!! jk, cute little Borneo. And the weight is fine. Some grow faster than others but most people dont feed as much to animals there trying to sell either. So if you feed him a good regimine he should start putting on some weight soon. Good luck with your little guy, let us know if you hae any questions.

What a lovely little lady! Nice Christmas present also. I would not worry about the weight. If she start feeding allright she will grow nicely. A little bit to skinny is better then too fat.
