what bugs to get

banana Dec 22, 2004 10:52 AM

I don't feel comfortable with my dragon on a "vegeterian" diet now, but I have no idea what to get her. My mom won't let me get crickets, and I heard silkworms are hard to take care of, and I heard roaches were good (from the conversation below) but she's asbout 4-5 months old so I dunno if she can eat them... any suggestions from anyone?

Silkworms are really not that hard to take care of. You can buy premade mulberry chow, or buy the powder and make it yourself (CHEAPER but kinda smells when you make it) lol. They have done well for me and I do not by any means take all precautions to "ensure" the food is 100% sterile when I put it in there. I keep my silkies in a 10 gallon rubbermaid tub, and there is a silkie care sheet on either mulberryfarms.com and/or californiasilkworms.com .

Roaches: There are different sizes, and I'm sure there are other people on here that know of the smaller species and the bigger species that can be used.
Roaches are healthy and they have little to no smell. Great food source.

Good luck Shana!

For the silkworms, do you poke holes in the lid, or leave the lid off? How many fit in a ten gallon tank? Thank you!

I leave the lid off! Usually, at least around 100 in a 10 gallon.

Try waxworms. Fed them a few once of twice a week. It is a treat for them, but you can only offer them ocassionally. You can get 50 for about $2.50 and they store well in the refrigerator.
