Cohabitation of sub species

crmowell Dec 22, 2004 10:58 AM

Hello All~
I have an interesting topic for conversation that has come up several times with different herpers I have known and as most issues like this, there are varying opinions.
The basic question is this: with a large enough vivarium, is it possible to house different species together? For instance, two different sub species of Boa [keeping same size/sex as a common rule]. Generally, I realize this is not acceptable, but I have heard of this being done successfully, without incident. I thought it would make for interesting discussion thread.

Happy Holidays!

I currently have a small ball (2 feet) and a juvenile Dumeral's Boa (2.5 feet) living in a 50 gallon long aquarium. They get along great, even go in their hideaway together. it is great, i had them seperated, then they knocked over the seperator and have been friends ever since!
thanks

Hunter,
I have heard or Dumerals boa eating other boas more then once. One of my friends back in high school had a three foot dum in with a awsome looking cicrle back bci that was also a three foot animal, both had been in the cage together for about six months when the dum decided to eat the bci. been the the bci was a lot thinner then the dum it wasnt a problem for the dum to eat the bci. be careful!

i have 1.1 ball pythons and 1.1 b.c.o. and i've kept the males in one enclosure and the females in another succesfully for about 2 years now. this situation will likely change as the boa get bigger and the pythons have reached a safy weight for reproduction. i've hade no problems yet.

cheers,
pete
