Keeping and breeding Storeria

Jan Grathwohl Jul 03, 2003 08:30 AM

Hi you guys

Well long time since i last wrote in here.. but hopefully that will change

I'm about to buy a few Storeria captive breed. The animals i'm to by is 2,2,4 Storeria dekayi and 0,1,3 Storere occipitomaculata.

Do any of you have any great advice as to how i best keep these small snakes?

WOW they sell CB Storeria...I think hell has frozen over. I keep all mine for feeders, but the same method wil work. I use either top soil or expandable coconut husk (such as bed a beast or eco earth) as the substrate. I keep it moist, but not saturated. Temps are in the mid-70's or so. Mine only eat small invertebrates such as slugs and worms though I have heard some people get them to take small salamanders. Tank size is up to you...I keep mine is Sterlite shoe boxes. Andy

Thanx Andy

Well might be that i should integrade them in my forthcoming rack-system then.

Not especially feder snakes in Europe.. think i will be the only one to keep these two species in Denmark when i get mine.. and only know of a few others keeping them at all in Europe.

You have a lot of interesting snakes, which you find common, that are very interesting to us in Europe (like i guess Natrix natrix, Zamenis (Elaphe) situla and the Vipera species are interesting for American keepers.

Absolutely right there Jan! It's a love we have in common. If a variety of natrix where introduced to herpers here, the appreciation of the gentle(r) nature would grow FAST and we'd all want some!

Well.. hopefully in a few years i can be able to make some of these lovely critters available to you over there

One day, these things will happen. And the world will be a better place! I have'nt "perfected" my housing techniques yet, I'm still not satisfied with how the system flows, so having to wait just provides the time to keep working on it.

The joy of this magnificent hobby is exactly that.. you can always improve the ways you do things.

Ouch! Okay, I'm not laughing (anymore). You insensitive, you brute! Does your mother know you posted that!? Alright, Jan, we really don't think less of you even though you may have lost respect from SOME people. I mean, not everyone could have read your post ...

... Jan, please forgive me. It's great news to hear that someone (I assume in Europe) is breeding these little gems. I regret that I have never reared them and am not familiar with their requirements. They do not exist where I live (not much does) however they can be quite common in their natural habitat. And one day due to habitat loss, people may be importing them ... from you.

Haha. I used to keep them as pets before I got into kings and ringnecks. Now they are feeders, though I still keep one or two for personal reasons I just find it hard to believe people breed them as I have tried keeping babies but have had a low success rate getting them to eat...even worms and small inverts such as fruit flies, as well as diff. WC larvae. Andy

Curious aint it? What exactly do those threads eat?? You'd think they'd pig out on something! I once had a dekay snake for a day which shared accomodation with an eastern king. Never found out what the little guy liked to eat.

Earthworms should do the trick. Got a nice care-sheet from the breeder explaining what he feeds them. Off course with the very small size of juveniles the earthworms has to be small.

Here in Vancouver we have a pet store (Petcetera) that sells a variety of insect larvae (grubs, mealworms, etc.) Do you have access to this sort of store? Just curious because I was not aware for quite a while that they offered this stuff. Had I been, I would likely have aquired some lacerta viridis from a breeder in the States a couple of years ago. Possibly would eat the same things as the storeria.

Lacerta viridis eats all kinds of insects.. seems to be quite easy to breed.. a lot of people breed these in Europe.

In time I hope to aquire some, they are extremely attractive to me (memories of childhood again).
Meanwhile, I have to get some more trout fingerlings, my little ones are eating more volume than I expected, or wanted to believe! I do appreciate a water snakes' appetite!!

You think that is bad...We went herping last week and got a nice size speckled king. I put him in the bag. Then we caught 2 small browns and a skink, which were going to go to my ringneck snake. Well, I figured he was a little big to notice them, but he ate all my damn feeders. I was pretty unhappy with that lol. Andy

That's hilarious! The closest I ever came to that scenario was several (20) years ago, when I put a 5 foot retic in with a six foot boa constrictor. The cage was huge so I assumed they'd be fine. OOPS! The boa came out to greet and EAT the python. Fortuneatley I had'nt yet turned my back, saw the attack and was able to separate them. Never again!
But I'm sure your king appreciated the bag lunch.

Well, live crabs do take the cake. I've heard that oysters might work as you suggest but, I bow to the better man!
Best of luck catching herps ... or crabs.
Michael

snakeguy88 Jul 08, 2003 07:57 PM

lol. Catching crabs...Reminds me of the time I kept walking up to girls and asking them if they wanted crabs 'cause I caught em...I got slapped a few times, but it was funny when I pulled out a bucket of live crabs and they all apologized Teenagers these days...Andy
