A new addition to our family First elapid...

snakeskin Jul 03, 2003 08:44 AM

I just bought this little bugger two days ago.
It's my first elapid, and I'm very happy with him (probably a "him" )

They guy who bred this snake fed it pieces of chickenmeat, anyone here ever done that? The snake is over 2 months old and quite plump, so it must work ('cause I guess it would have died if it hadn't eaten all that time )

Cool little cobra. That's an Aspidelaps, right? Chicken meat isn't a great food source, it has no calcium and few vitamins and minerals. Whole food items are always best. He looks like he really wants a mouse... I can see it in his eyes.

When I took the pic he didn't want ANY food I guess, he just arrived 5 minutes before that.

I know chicken is a poor food source, but this little guy has already lived 2 months eating nothing but chickenmeat.
He is too small to eat even the smallest (normal) pinkie mouse.

(maybe I'll sty Dwarf-mouse pinkies )

I'm going to start out by feeding him "clean" meat. After he's taken that a few times I'll dust it with a vitamin/ minerall supplement. My experience with this is that the snakes refuse that stuff on their food however.

Once he's grown a little I'll feed him mouse parts (legs and stuff)

These animals are quite voracious feeders so that won't be any problem I guess

I assure you he is quite capable of taking a small pink mouse. think newborn.

Either way, great looking snake, makes me jealous.

Though I must admit I am a bit leary about snakes with no antivenom.

Well, yesterday was the big day for him... The day before yesterday he shed his skin nicely and last night I've put a very small pinkie mouse with him.
I'm at work now, so I'll see what has happened this evening.

Saker,

I'm also very cautious on obtaining snakes which have no antivenom, but fact is, over here in holland, they can't even supply african or american antivenom! So, whether there is antivenom or not, I won't be able to recieve it once I get bitten
(That's something to keep in mind for us here...)
