water/metabolism/stools (more newbie questions!)

britbiker Dec 22, 2004 04:11 PM

How often should you "water" your dragons? I try to "spritz" them with a spray bottle and/or give them water from an eye dropper about twice a day. Is this excessive or about right?

My beardies are about 13 weeks old. Is their metabolism going through a change from young to adult? I ask because, at first, they would gobble down every cricket or mealworm I gave them immediately. Now, they may only eat once a day (unless they are having snacks in between I don't know about).

My dragons seem to have regular bowel movements (poop), which I believe is a good sign for any animal. However, I have sometimes noticed that, right next to their dropping, there is a cylindrical white shape also. Could this be from the calcium on the crickets or is it something I should worry about?

And last, I saw a picture on the board recently of a young woman letting her dragon drink from the tap. I always use distilled water for my beardies, as I do for my snakes. Is tap water ok to use for beardies?

As always, many thanks for your help.

The white-structure next to your dragons feces would be the urate. Which is perfectly normal. If your dragon isn't eating much of their live-animal-proteins, then make sure that they are eating their greens. I keep greens in the cages all day long. Dump them out at night and then replace them in the morning. My adults even run around their cages trying to catch their roaches.

Oh yeah, I just spray my baby/juvie dragons twice a day. My adults get sprayed once a day. And they all get a bath (not together) once a week.
