caught this guy in a yard on plantation key with permission from the property owners. easiest places to find them was in residential areas that were full of trees and plants. this one found on plantation key in a tree, others spotted behind shutters on a house, a couple found on a fence at the dolphin research center on grassy key. heard some other places to find them are big pine key (origin of introduction), little torch key, and big torch key. possibly elsewhere. got one with two parallel rows of spots on its back instead of random pattern. need to look up more about these beauties. definitely the highlight of my trip. they're such beautiful geckos, the people in the areas we found them didnt want us taking them from their yards because they like them as well! but they were gracious enough to allow us to catch them for photos.

first one spotted! right before it was spotted, i looked at the huge tree it was in and said aloud "now if i were a giant day gecko here, i would be in that tree right there."

even though these are a protected species and reportedly uncommon in the keys, it was the single species of snake we ran across the most.

between 6 and 7 was the magic hour for us in road cruising. the light rain also helped one night in camp.

we think this is some sort of shell-less snail. it was found while flipping rocks and at first i thought it was actually a berry that had been sliced in half. what looks like the stem actually looked like a feeding appendage. can anyone help identify this?!

umop_apisdn Dec 22, 2004 07:35 PM

from below you could see what seemed like it was the seeds or core of the "berry", which i believe is actually its inner organs.
