Reptile pee-not urate-a clear stream of liquid-defense mechanism?

chunks_89 Dec 22, 2004 07:38 PM

I posted about a friend who was left with a gracilis. She mentioned the cham "peed", and i explained how a reptile defecated. Peeing=not normal!

I took care of a mali uromastyc for a friend christmas last year and the uromastyx peed on me, and i thought it very strange. She is still alive today and very well, despite a keeper that's not too keen on her....(i go to his house and take care of her sometimes when he decides he is too lazy etc)

The same thing was described in the Gracilis.

Is this a defence mechanism? It happened to tthe Mali just as i picked her up and she was scared.

Clear liquid in a stream...like human pee...waht is it?

Thanks!

If the cham has been drinking a LOT and has nothing in its stomach it might pass liquid like this. I don't think it is a defense mechanism in chams. For most species defences are gaping, letting themselves fall off a branch like a dead leaf, flaring colors, flattening themselves to look bigger, curling and uncurling or lashing the tail. The more timid species tend to roll behind a branch to "disappear", and freeze.

Yeah tahts waht a figured, though I knew it rare for reptiels to "pee" and knew all normal forms of defence.

It usually occured when someone was looking at or picking up the reptile that had done it. My friend was looking at the gracilis when it "peed" and I had just picked up a panicky uro who then "peed"...uros don't drink much AT ALL!!

Well i'll jsut go with the lots of water theory, the graceful's previous owner fed it every 5 days as much as it would eat (yah i know) and was probably drinking more due to an empty stomach and etc etc...probably ends in peeing.

Thanks Carlton, always a help.
