General husbandry info for Children's python...

sbogill Dec 23, 2004 12:00 AM

Hi. I just acquired a new children's python. Being a long time colubrid keeper, she is my first boid. I was just wondering if she has any special care requirements that my colubrids don't have. She is about 37" long and very thick. What size prey items can she handle and about how often should I feed her?

Congratulations on your new snake!
I have Stimson's pythons they have about the same requirements as Children's pythons
They are pretty easy to take care of, they don't have any special needs- their care is similar to colubrids. I have the Stimson's set up much like my corn & rat snakes they do fine!
I use aspen substrate- they like to burrow, they also don't mind things to climb on. Cage temp gradient is about 75-85
I hope this helps! Happy Holidays!

There are a few differences between childrens and colubrids. I have a care sheet on my website. They are pretty easy to keep and breed. Just remember to put a pair together during cooling and not in the spring like colubrids. They are awesome pythons.
Good luck,
