Sperm Plugs?

balls4all Dec 23, 2004 02:01 AM

I know this is most likely a very newbie question but I am a newbie to ball pythons. How do you identify a sperm plug? Im guessing they are yellow in color and look similar to a defication . I have not been able to find a picture or a description anywhere. I have a het for pied and a het for albino that I plan to breed next season. Im currently building a rack and will be building a herp room in the spring. Is it possible that the female will need to be introduced before sperm plugs start to produce? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Great photo, Do you normally find these in your tub or are they attached to the males vent?
Would like to thank all that take the time to share your knowledge. This is a great forum!

You usually find sperm plugs but attempting to invert the hemipenes of the snake, Kinda the same way you pop a baby. The plugs just pop out if the snake is producing sperm, However on snake that have been breeding you won't always find the plugs. Thanks David

PS. That is a very nice picture of the sperm plugs.

Surely they come out on thier own too? It doesn't look like something that should/would stay in there forever.

Cheryl,

You can also find them in the cage as well. I would guess they have to be forced out before or during breeding.

Those plugs look like they'd be darned uncomfortable!! I thought I remembered reading that sometimes they come out attached to the shed too.
